Continuous Improvement Coaching

A consultant that gives a pre-packaged solution with all the answers won’t be helpful in the long run. I teach you a fundamental problem-solving pattern as well as a mindset so that you can solve any problem and close any gap between where you are and where you want to be.

You are the expert in your process. I’m the expert in HOW to improve a process but not in WHAT to do. I help influence the thought process but let you do the thinking. I don’t have the answers. I do have a structure to help you improve. Toyota Kata is a routine comprised of short frequent coaching between a coach and learner. The routines are designed to help you learn a new way to improve.

That means starting with clear direction. What is a long-term goal that feels impossible right now? How can we add more value to our patients or customers? Secondly, I help you gather a deep understanding of the current condition followed by setting a short-term target condition. From there, leaders and staff experiment their way forward. Each day making progress by learning something new about the obstacles they are facing on their way to the goal.

This approach is common sense, but not common practice.

How Coaching Helps

Continuous improvement has the power to reduce waste and add value. More importantly, practicing new ways of thinking creates new neural pathways within your employees. This problem-solving capability can then be generalized to any problem or challenge such that organizations can truly achieve anything they strive for.

Many organizations want to ‘hold people accountable’ and get tough on deadlines and results. This approach has its limitations. I believe in coaching leaders to teach and promote an experimental mindset that increases problem-solving capability. When leaders are held accountable for daily learning and experimentation, true progress is achieved.

Scientific thinking is the foundation of all improvement work – this means focusing on data, facts, hypothesis, and experimentation. You must adopt a curious and ‘learn through failure’ mindset to truly achieve innovation and create more value in your organization. However, this is not our default mode of thinking. We tend to go straight to solutions, many of which end up often not solving the root of the problem. I coach you to create new habits that can be generalized to solve any problem or achieve any goal.

Lisa C., Healthcare Executive

"I really appreciated her [Dorsey’s] approach of teaching and coaching us through the process. Her style was very engaging which helped us dig deeper. When we started it was difficult to define our current condition and we had some resistance on our team. Dorsey guided us to work through strategies until we had THE breakthrough!  Dorsey continued with us through all of the stages of the Kata.  We made significant improvement on a topic that initially was not viewed as a problem related to the actual process, we currently had in place but our metrics and data told us there was a problem.  Learning the Kata was a great experience and extremely valuable to our organization.  We are grateful for Dorsey’s expertise and continued support."
