Leaders as Coaches

Many leaders are now asked to be coaches. This seems to be good news AND bad news. Good news is that coaching is becoming accepted as a mainstream way of leading. The bad news in some cases is that we ask leaders to coach without showing them HOW to do it. Coaching is a skill and requires motivation, practice, and feedback to improve. In this course, we learn how to adopt a coach approach to leadership including practice with asking questions, staying curious, listening, offering feedback, and reflecting.

Coaching Mindset for Lean Coaches

Are you on a path of developing yourself as well as others?  Are you willing to go deeper with your coach approach? A recent Harvard Business Review article cited research that most managers think they are good at coaching but really, they are telling people what to do. The same could be true of Lean coaches. We have a habit of teaching, telling, and using tools to solve problems. Join us in building new habits required to create conditions for discovery and development. You will gain helpful insights about your current coach approach; your assumptions and beliefs will be challenged, and you will gain a new perspective about what it means to be an effective coach.

Discussion topics:

  • What is your purpose as a Lean Coach?

  • Discover Habits of Coaching for Compliance vs. Compassion

  • Move from Asking Questions to Being in Inquiry

  • Expand your Levels of Listening

  • Reflection on the results of your coach approach

Basic Mediation Skills for the Workplace

Disagreements are an everyday part of working on a team; what’s not everyday is our comfort with resolving them. When colleagues can’t work through a problem on their own, you might be called to step in and help. How do you do that effectively? How can you facilitate turning conflict into cooperation? Mediation is a structured, interactive process where a third party neutrally assists disputing parties in resolving conflict. When done well, it can also lead to stronger relationships and better communication. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basic outline of a mediated conversation and how to use active listening, reframing, values identification, and clarifying questions to get to the root of the issue, which supports what everyone needs to move forward productively.

Lili B., Marketing Consultant

“Dorsey’s experience and loving attitude is an incredible gift for me, and my coaching practice. In just a few weeks, she transformed my cognitive and emotional ability to listen to my learner with undivided attention and compassion. What sets her apart is her heart, and intuitive insights to know when to push, when to pull and when to get out of the way. Coaching with her has taught me a lot about coaching and also about leadership in general. Recommended!"
